Zermatt is nestled in the shadow of the Matterhorn and the perfect destination for a fantastic ski holiday, on and off Piste. The town is 1,620 m (5,310 ft), and lies about 10 km (6.2 mi) from the over 10,800 ft (3,291.84 m) high Theodul Pass bordering Italy. With no cars allowed you can explore the snow covered streets with ease and drink in the atmosphere of this quintessentially Swiss resort.
We’ve skied in Europe at some great resorts including Garmisch, Verbier, Meribel, Avoriaz and Livigno, but Zermatt is a firm favourite. We’ve enjoyed two memorable holidays in Zermatt with Inghams. On arrival on both trips we began the experience with an enormous Bratwurst in crusty bread a great start to a week of skiing and eating! Our first trip we stayed in a shared chalet with live in chalet girls and guys and the second in a hotel offering half board accommodation. Our locations offered easy access to the piste on the Gornergrat mountain train.
The skiing is ideal for intermediate skiers as well as providing less challenging slopes for beginners. The height of the resort guarantees a good covering throughout the season.
Apres-ski for us was defined by the discovery of Caramel vodka available at one of the very popular bars. Apparently the owners have been approached by a well-known drinks company for the recipe but would rather keep it a Zermatt experience. The idea is to buy a bottle you leave with them to consume during the week. Or you can glug your way through several as it’s extremely Moorish!
There’s a huge amount for families to do in Zermatt off the slopes. There’s an Zermatt ice rink in the centre of town with skating and curling, an indoor climbing hall and the subterranean world of Zermatlantis, the Matterhorn Museum, which reveals the history of the village of Zermatt. This includes original houses, a multimedia room and finds from the first ascent of the Matterhorn.
Zermatt has it all for us, great skiing (lots of snow) fabulous food and drink and a beautiful and atmospheric resort. Most people only have a week a year to ski so a guaranteed fantastic experience is essential.
Beautiful! We did a lot of skiing before children although Husband is so much better than me 🙂
It’s fabulous Zermatt, we went a couple of times – before POD arrived 🙂
