Pais Vasco is well recognised for its unique flavours, tapas and wine with cities such as Bilbao and San Sebastian boasting Michelin star chefs. While the Basque Country is largely commercialised, it’s a land surrounded by lush countryside, mountains and coastline – with much of the Urkiola National Park, Valderejo National Park and Urdaibai Biosphere Reservation untouched.
This summer we’re travelling by cruise ferry to Spain where we’ll get the opportunity to discover what the Northern part of the county has to offer. We’ll be sailing to Bilbao which is the region’s largest city and home to the stunning Casco Viejo. The gothic architecture in the old town a contrast to the spectacularly modern Guggenheim. Outside this museum is Maman, the giant spider statue, and there are other cultural spaces in the area too like the Alhóndiga which used to be a wine warehouse as well as numerous galleries. We’re most looking forward to discovering the medieval part of the city when we pass through with its markets, shops and taverns. No doubt traditional tapas will be offer along with other Spanish delicacies. Bilbao is known as a gastronomic hub, there’s even a Museum of Gastronomy located in nearby town Llodio!
As we’re heading southward for our trip, we may not make it to San Sebastián on this occasion given it’s north of Bilbao. Recognised for its beaches, architecture and culture, the city is built on the Bay of La Concha which is regarded as one of the most beautiful bays in the world. The amazing island (Isla de Santa Clara) is accessible at low tide, where there is a small beach, views of the city and a lighthouse. La Concha is just one of the beaches inSan Sebastián with Ondarretta and Zurriola being the two. There are stunning views from the hills with lovely parks and gardens inside the city. Much like Bilbao, there’s an abundance of Michelin star restaurants with fresh produce available from the market near the old quarter.
So exciting! I spent a month in the basque country this spring (the French side, actually) and loved it! You will have an amazing time! xVictoria
