Planning our first family camping trip

We do love a summer road trip even if exploring for a full 6 weeks isn’t doable – we wish! We didn’t get our road trip fix last year although we did squeeze a lot of travel in with August spent showing POD Venice and exploring the Venetian islands before taking an activity break with Neilson Holidays in Sardinia. We really not having a summer road trip though so later this month we’re hitting the road again. This time, instead of taking the ferry, we’ve set our sights on driving from Calais to a campsite in Switzerland. Yes, we are embarking on our first ever family camping trip!!!

As you can imagine eight-year-old POD will be beside herself with excitement. We’ve taken her glamping a few times before but this will be her first experience of proper camping. She’s been asking to go camping for years and as a child that relishes being outdoors, we know she’s just going to love it! Both JD and I have camped several times in the past, in the UK and abroad, but not as adults so this is going to be a first for all of us! We did stay on a camp in the Venezuelan jungle for 4 days before POD was born but I’m not sure that counts as we weren’t in an actual tent! Either way, with the majority of our travels, focused on discovery, exploration and adventure, we reckon we’ll have a truly memorable time as three campers exploring off the beaten track.

We’ll be taking Eurotunnel, which we’ve used many times before, from the UK to Calais so we’ve got our own car with us. We’ll then drive from there to Les Haudères, in the d’Evolène region, potentially stopping in Troyes in France en route to break up the journey. Our campsite, Camping Molignon, is situated in Les Haudères in the Swiss Alps.

Doesn’t the campsite and the scenery around it look stunning?

Having explored Lake Maggiore in Italy a couple of months back, and had road trips in destinations like the Picos de Europa and Ponga Mountains in Northern Spain prior to that, I for one cannot wait to be in the mountains again. Granted I’m worrying about how I’ll be able to charge my gadgets (and I’m making all the lists!) but it will be incredible!

We first considered heading in this direction last year with the view to stopping in France, Switzerland, Austria and Italy. While that’s still a trip we’d like to do, this is a slimmed-down version to embrace camping and capture the beauty of Switzerland. Let us know if you have any recommendations for places to visit in and around the d’Evolène region. Tips for first-time campers would, of course, be most welcome too! Here’s to the Doves’ next adventure!
