Situated just off the beautiful Piazza delle Erbe is the Torre dei Lamberti – the tallest of Verona’s towers. It was built by the powerful Lamberti family in 1172 and belongs to a group of towers next to the Palazzo della Ragione. Overlooking the historic city, this 84-metre high tower boasts 360-degree views for those brave enough to reach the terrace and belfry.
Aside from Christmas Day, the Torre dei Lamberti is open all year round with tickets including entry to the Gallery of Modern Art. We’d arrived towards the end of the day having walked miles wandering the streets and taking in the sights. It was the first time in eight years we’d gone away without the small one so naturally, we explored everywhere! Somehow we managed to clock up twenty miles while we were in Verona although it’s stunning so very easy to do.
The Torre dei Lamberti tower has two famous bells – the Rengo which summoned the council and citizens of Verona in times of war, also sounding the alarm when there was a fire, and the Marangona which kept the time and brought routine to city life.
You can take a lift up Torre dei Lamberti but we opted for the stairs, not realising there are 368 steps to climb. It was one of those scenarios whereby the lift was being a bit slow so we thought it would be quicker to walk. About a hundred steps in, having already walked all day, we realised getting the lift up would have been a better decision. That said, as the lift doesn’t stop en route, we would have had to return to the bottom only to catch the lift up. Given how embarrassing it would have been to walk down 100 steps to catch the lift up, we continued to climb taking in this historical monument and peering out of the slit windows when we could.
How we were rewarded when we reached the terrace though, the views were simply magnificent. Captivated by this wonderful city, we were able to take in a completely different perspective. Verona is somewhere we’ve wanted to visit for some time and it was an absolute delight having a bird’s eye view. Just look at these views!
We absolutely adored our time in Verona although it was strange being there without the small one. Unless a hosted trip, we always travel as a three so it felt strange. Nice to spend some time together too. POD would have enjoyed Verona but she certainly wouldn’t have walked as far as we did. We’ll be sharing more of Verona in the coming weeks and if you’ve not been before, book a flight – it’s so worth it!
