Both myself and ‘the POD Father’ were well traveled before we met. I spent two years living and working in Australia while back-packed around SE Asia, Australia, New Zealand and Fiji around the same time. As a couple our summer holidays mostly involved exploration of some kind whether in Europe or destinations further afield such as Tahiti, Canada and Antigua.
We had a busy start to our stay in New Zealand having landed two days late following an un-scheduled stop in LA. Our friends had texted to welcome us to the North Island only to discover we were enjoying wine and cheese with locals at Santa Monica beach! We made it to Hamilton in time for an important cricket match before dragging ourselves to Rotorua to see geysers and thermal mud pools. Next on the list as we made our way southward was Waitomo.
Our time in the jungle with the Pemon indians and our visit to the World’s highest waterfall, Angel Falls, were certainly the highlights of our trip round Venezuela. Access to Canaima National Park is only by air so when we left, the only way to reach Ciudad Bolívar was via a 4 seater Cessna.
The Kakslauttanen Arctic Resort is renowned for being one of the best places to watch the Northern Lights. From August right through to the end of April, you can admire the delights of the skies from your own glass igloo. Not only that, the new Kelo–Glass igloos combine the comfort and warmth of Kakslauttanen’s log cabins with the views of their world-famous glass igloos. Continue Reading…
What’s the appeal of Mark Warner?
Mark Warner has been the topic of conversation a lot recently. But what’s the appeal of their holidays and are they right for you? We take a look at the most frequently asked questions.
Turquoise Holidays is one of a kind. The team’s passion for the destinations they cover is exceptional with their recommendations based on first hand experience. They stood out by a country mile when we chose our honeymoon as they listened to our requirements and made suggestions based on what we wanted. Our Tahitian honeymoon was just superb – the perfect combination of relaxation and adventure coupled with breathtaking scenery and local cuisine. The tranquility of Tikehau in the Tuamotu Islands meant we were quick to relax by our beach bungalow. By contrast, Moorea (Mo’orea) in the Society Islands enabled us to do as little or as much as we wanted. The quiet times saw us enjoy magnificent views of the lagoon from our overwater bungalow while feeding tropical fish. Our adventurous side involved swimming with sharks, stroking stingrays and attempting Tahitian dancing. We may have had a few too many with the locals too.
From the fascinating and quirky to the weird and wonderful, here’s our pick of the top most unusual places to stay. Featuring glass igloos, treerooms and an underwater hotel.
One of the things I loved about our Tahitian honeymoon was the overwater bungalow. You barely had to step out of your room to be knee deep in a lagoon where you fed tropical fish bread from your hand. But what if you could encapsulate yourself in a turquoise bubble and watch fish swimming round from an underwater room. It’s an innovative concept isn’t it?

With the New Year upon us, it’s time to check out what’s on offer in 2016 and firm up those travel plans. We’re definitely in the adventurous camp although having a 5 year old in tow does mean the days of sleeping the jungle, trekking over molten rock and walking behind waterfalls are behind us. For the time being anyway!

The most well renowned place for street art is around Brick Lane and Shoreditch. This part of East London is a mecca for talent with artists travelling there from all over the world. Banksy, Roa, Stik, Malarky, Dscreet, Jim Vision and D*Face are just a few of the names associated with the area. There are truly incredible pieces to be found and, while organised tours are available, I took to the streets with my camera with a view to capturing some of the creativity.
